I’ve just (re)built another site on that template – want to take a look? It’s at http://www.fairtradeinoldham.org.uk – I’m quite proud of it! Lawrence built the original site on the iChurch 2 template, and to be honest it had stood the test of time and still looked fine, but they wanted updating to the new look, which I have done for them – but I thought it was a good opportunity to play with the iChurch+ template, and I reckon it’s worked out well. I love building sites 🙂
Dan MorrellKeymasterOh yes, Derek, excellent! Well worth it. I’ll take the plunge eventually!
Dan MorrellKeymasterHi Andy,
Wow, you’re getting really good search ranking results! WordPress is very search engine friendly, and the iChurch 4.0 theme particularly so. You’re also running the Google XML Sitemap plugin, which reports back to Google about changes to your site, which helps. You’re keeping active on your site, which tells the search engines that it’s likely to be interesting, too. If you want to improve your SEO, what I’d recommend next is that you install the ‘All in One SEO’ plugin, which is the one Derek’s referring to above (I think!), and that you start tagging your content with keywords. I’ve posted some content about improving your SEO here – http://forumurc.org.uk/faqs/ and here – http://forumurc.org.uk/support-forum/hot-tips-group5/tips-and-discoveries-forum17/seo-thread25/ – plus I will pin interesting things that I read on the subject to our Pinterest ‘Church Websites’ board, which you can find here – http://pinterest.com/wmerecentre/church-websites/. I love this stuff, I think it’s really interesting – and look forward to hearing your thoughts, please…..?! 🙂
Dan MorrellKeymasterI’ll just have a little peek in your site, Andy, and check what you’re running. Watch this space…
Dan MorrellKeymasterHi
What drives the current “out of the box” SEO, as it seems to be doing a good job at the moment?
AndyDan MorrellKeymasterHi Derek – is this the All in One SEO plugin? If so, I’ve just had a look (and upgraded ours!), and it doesn’t seem to require you to re-place your Google Analytic code – but you can if you wish I guess. I honestly don’t know the answer at this stage, but my advice would be to try things out and see what happens! Not much help perhaps – maybe some one else knows more than I do at the moment….?
Dan MorrellKeymasterThanks folks-done.
Dan MorrellKeymasterYup, I’m with Derek: there’s no need to set ‘parent’ and ‘child’ pages in the way we used to. Now, whenever you want to add to or rearrange your navigation structure, head over to Appearance – Menus and edit your menu there. For anyone who’s a bit hazy on how to do this, I’ve put instructions into the ‘How To’ section of the support site: http://forumurc.org.uk/faqs/. Hope that helps! 🙂
Dan MorrellKeymasterjust a first thought – you have updated the menu when adding the fifth page? Not aware of a limit as I have nine ‘child’ pages from the one ‘parent’.
Dan MorrellKeymasterThat looks better – have tried to see if I can modify the Twitter feed to change it to the background colour. Cannot do it on the twitter gadget maker. Will try Firebug later as it haven’t got round to installing it on my desktop yet.
Dan MorrellKeymaster🙂
Dan MorrellKeymasterRight – now I have a dark area which is better than the white area
Dan MorrellKeymasterwill give that a try later today. Many thanks.
Had to play about with colours quite a bit to make home page colourful and also readable. The darker surround really makes the pictures stand out.Dan MorrellKeymasterHi Derek
Great to see you making use of the new theme and getting creative! I look forward to watching how things develop. Believe it or not, this area is the ‘main content area’! You currently have a widget in the Ads Above Content widget area, which is what is pulling the ‘Do not forget to check the stop press’ text. To get rid of it you can drag it out and the ad area will then disappear. However, with or without the ‘ad’, the area below it (main content area) will appear. You can change its colour from ‘light’ to ‘dark’ in Theme Options – Styles – Content Style; however it doesn’t match the texture/colour of your upper section – it gives you a black/dark grey – which might work well for your photos, possibly….? I think your options are probably to have a play around with different configurations – such as using this area for something useful – or with Firebug to find out how to edit it. If, for instance, you were to drag your slider & slogan down into the Primary Area rather than the Featured Above area, you could give it a dark background (in the same way I described above), and keep your columns in the Featured Below content area, so that you’d keep the different colour for there. Does that help at all?
Dan MorrellKeymasterWe discussed this on iChurch Level 3 recently, as we suspected it was nonsense-Latin. It is. According to Wikipedia, this phrase actually translates as ‘the unlawful are not carbon silicate’, which begs the question: why would Lawrence want to make note of that interesting observation in his signature…? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Illegitimi_non_carborundum
